BC Agents & AI

The Agent Designer is the no-code layer in Business Central that lets you configure your own AI agents for your workflows without programming. You describe a task, define triggers, steps and limits, and the agent carries it out inside the system. That is not a development project, it is configuration. The technology is therefore the smaller hurdle. The real work comes before it: clear rules, a defined process, and a clean data foundation the agent can act on reliably. Because it looks easy, exactly that part tends to get skipped: by which rules the agent may decide, where its limit lies, and who steps in when a case falls outside the rule. Those three decisions are not technical, they are a decision about responsibility. If you cannot write them down in three sentences, the process is not settled yet.

What does the Agent Designer deliver?

You describe a task, define triggers, steps and limits, and the agent carries it out in Business Central. That is not a development project but configuration. Therein lies the opportunity, and also the misunderstanding that most often gets expensive in practice.

Because it looks easy, the hard part tends to get skipped: the question of what rules the agent may decide by, where its limit lies and who steps in when a case falls outside the rule. Those three definitions are not technology but a decision about responsibility.

In practice that means: before you configure the first agent, write down in three sentences what it may do, what it may not do and who handles the exception. Whoever cannot do that in three sentences has not yet clarified the process, and then the agent is the wrong next tool.

Status September 2026: preview, release, costs

The Agent Designer has been available as a public preview in Business Central online since 6 February 2026. Microsoft has scheduled general availability in the release plan for October 2026, with the usual caveat that dates can shift. Like the Sales Order Agent and the Payables Agent, custom agents consume Copilot Credits; Microsoft has not yet published the billing rates for self-built agents. Agent definitions can be exported as a file and moved between sandbox environments. What that means for your budget is in What does Copilot cost in Business Central?

Why do governance and the data foundation come first?

  • Governance first: an agent without clear rules automates your lack of clarity. Before you configure, it needs to be settled which decision the agent may take and which stays firmly with a person.
  • Data foundation first: the agent reads and writes on your master data. If that is ambiguous, the agent does not become more careful, it scales the ambiguity.

AI without hype means this here: the Agent Designer makes the building easy, not the owning. The owning stays a steering task on your side, and it cannot be shifted into the configuration. Microsoft provides the control mechanisms; setting the rules is up to you.

Before you build your own agents, it is worth looking at rules and data foundation. That is exactly what we clarify in conversation. Control stays on your side, with Business Central as our home ground.

This is what a finished agent looks like day to day: the proposal in the system, the approval with a person.

An agent without clear rules does not automate your work, it automates your ambiguity.

Frequently asked questions

Briefly asked

Do you need programming skills for the Agent Designer in Business Central?

No, the Agent Designer works without code. The real requirement is not technical, but lies in clear rules, a defined process and a clean data foundation.

When will the Agent Designer be generally available?

According to Microsoft's release plan in October 2026, following the public preview since February 2026. Dates in the release plan can shift. Until release, the preview is suited to prototypes in a sandbox, not to productive use.

What is the biggest hurdle with your own AI agent in Business Central?

Not the technology, but governance: defining which decisions the agent may make, where its boundary lies and who intervenes when a case falls outside the rule.

Which processes are worth a custom agent first?

Recurring, rule-based flows with a clear data basis: notifications, checks, report runs. Processes with many exceptions or unclear rules are unsuitable; there it is not the agent that fails, but the groundwork.

What benefits does the Agent Designer actually bring?

Three: it lowers the entry barrier, because business users describe agents in the web client instead of programming them. The agents work inside the system itself, with the same permissions, data and processes as the users. And automation becomes incremental, one process after another, without an integration project. The prerequisite remains a data foundation that carries the decisions.
