Is there AI for Business Central on-premises and Dynamics NAV?

Microsoft's Copilot and agents are online only. What still works on-premises, what it costs and when migrating is the better path.

Copilot, the AI agents, the Agent Designer and the MCP server of Business Central run exclusively in Business Central online. For on-premises installations and for Dynamics NAV, Microsoft does not deliver any of these functions, not even at extra cost. What works on-premises are your own or purchased extensions that connect external AI services via interfaces: for document capture, text suggestions or analyses. That works, but it costs your own operations, your own maintenance and your own responsibility. The decision is therefore rarely “AI yes or no” but “AI as an island or as part of the cloud path”. In both cases it starts with the same task: a data foundation that holds.

What Microsoft delivers online only

Microsoft answers the question unambiguously in its own Copilot overview: Copilot is exclusive to Business Central online and not available for other deployment types such as on-premises or private cloud. This applies to all building blocks of the AI layer:

  • Copilot functions in daily work: chat, analysis in everyday language, field suggestions, marketing texts, bank reconciliation, matching of e-invoices.
  • The agents: Sales Order Agent, Payables Agent and Expense Agent.
  • The Agent Designer for your own agents without programming.
  • The MCP server, through which external AI tools access Business Central in a controlled way.

The reason is the architecture: these functions run on Microsoft's AI services and are billed via Copilot Credits, both of which are tied to the online tenant. An on-premises installation does not have this connection, and Microsoft has not announced retrofitting it.

What still works on-premises

On-premises is not AI-free, but there AI is an extension, not a property of the system. Three routes are common:

  1. Your own extension with an external AI service: an extension calls a language model service in your own cloud, for example for document texts, classification or summaries. You control model, data and costs, but you also carry development, operations and the adjustment with every Business Central update.
  2. Partner solutions for on-premises: some software vendors offer AI agents and document recognition that also work with on-premises installations and older versions, usually as a subscription with fixed costs per agent or user. That is the fastest route, but it ties you to another vendor and its update cycle.
  3. AI outside the ERP: analyses and assistants in Microsoft 365 or the Power Platform access your data via interfaces without Business Central itself needing AI functions. Good for reports and knowledge questions, unsuitable for anything that should post or create documents in the ERP.

For all three routes the same applies: the responsibility for what the AI creates or suggests lies with you, not with Microsoft. What it costs, honestly calculated

Online you pay for consumption: the Sales Order Agent runs at around 14 Copilot Credits per typical order, a pack of 25,000 credits costs 200 US dollars a month. On-premises you pay fixed costs instead: development or licence of the extension, the AI service by consumption, operations, and with every version change the check whether everything still fits together. On top comes the effort that does not exist online at all: the integration itself.

For a single, clearly limited use case the on-premises solution can still be cheaper, for example document recognition in purchasing. As soon as several fields are added, the calculation tips, because every integration is built and maintained individually, while online every new function arrives with the update. Dynamics NAV: what is realistic

For Dynamics NAV there are no AI functions from Microsoft, and none will come. What works are the same extension routes as on-premises, only with older technology and a smaller circle of vendors. Every investment in AI on NAV is an interim solution whose remaining life depends on the version.

With NAV the more honest question is therefore not “which AI” but “when and how to migrate”. Anyone planning the switch can think the AI question through at the same time: the data clean-up before migration is exactly the preparation every agent will need later. The real decision: island or cloud path

Anyone staying on-premises needs a reason that holds: regulatory requirements, sites without reliable connectivity or deep custom development that cannot be replaced in the short term. Then a limited AI extension with a clear purpose is the right path, and you plan it as what it is: an island with its own costs.

Anyone already considering the switch should not retrofit AI on-premises to avoid it. That buys time, but twice: once for the island, once later for the migration. The better use of the same funds is the data foundation: clean up master data before migration, clarify processes, assign responsibilities. That is the preparation for both paths, and it is the part nobody gets for free with an update.
