Assessment

We are not a system comparison service and we do not give a „fits everyone“ answer. We say honestly when Business Central is a viable home for complex processes: when you want a close-to-standard, upgradeable platform in the Microsoft ecosystem that carries automation and AI on a clean data foundation. Where that does not fit, we say so openly. Evaluate an ERP against your business, not against feature lists. Four checks separate a fitting system from a well-demonstrated one: have your three most complex processes shown live, with your own sample data rather than a standard demo. Ask what your master data has to look like for the system to work, and who cleans it up. Examine the implementation partner, not just the product, because with Business Central the partner decides more about the outcome than the software does. And watch for the moment a demo switches back to slides: that is exactly where the gap is.

How do you evaluate an ERP system?

Evaluate an ERP against your business, not against feature lists. Four checks separate a fitting system from a well-demoed one:

  1. Your three most complex processes, live. Not slides, not a standard demo: the vendor walks through your intercompany flow, your variant logic, your rebate model, with your own sample data. Where the demo switches back to PowerPoint, you have found the gap.
  2. The data migration, honestly scoped. Ask what your master data must look like for the new system to work, and who cleans it. The answer tells you more about the coming project than any feature comparison.
  3. The partner, not just the product. With Business Central and comparable systems, the implementation partner determines more of the outcome than the software. Evaluate the team that will actually work on your project, not the reference list.
  4. Five-year cost, including your own customisations. Licence price is the smallest part. Every customisation you order today is maintenance you pay for at every future change.

The common mistake is the long requirements catalogue: two hundred criteria produce a scored ranking and no insight, because every mature ERP ticks most boxes. Fit shows up in the hard ten percent, and that is where the evaluation should spend its time. A structured assessment before you sign is cheaper than a change request after go-live.

In DGP projects one simple cut has proven itself: the three most complex processes in the house are demonstrated with real sample data, and nothing else is scored.

What do we do, and what not?

We do not compare systems against each other and we do not talk any product down. We are Business Central specialists and we say honestly when BC carries your complexity and when it does not. That boundary matters, so that you know from the start what you can expect from a conversation with us and what you cannot.

So we are not a comparison aggregator and not a selection consultancy weighing up every system. If you need a formal system selection across five vendors, we are the wrong partner for it, and we tell you that up front rather than halfway through the process.

What we bring instead is depth in Business Central and honesty about its limits. In practice that is often more useful than a broad matrix, because the question in practice is rarely which system fits best in theory, but whether a particular one concretely carries your case.

When is Business Central the right home?

Business Central fits when you need a standard-near basis that carries several entities, manufacturing or international rollouts, with ongoing updates and the Microsoft ecosystem instead of a custom solution grown over years. Look more closely here:

  • With very deep industry specialisation or extreme variant configuration, the standard can tear.
  • Then what counts is whether targeted extensions cover it, or whether another platform would be more honest. We name that upfront.

The boundary does not run at company size but at the question of how much of your business is genuinely unique. In our experience that share is smaller than expected, and what remains can usually be represented through targeted extensions without touching the core. The test question is: can you name, for a given process, what competitive advantage it creates?

What is the real question?

The real question is rarely "which system" but "is our data foundation and are our processes mature enough for the move". Without that foundation, every system choice leads into the same dead end, because the new system inherits the same unclear rules as the old one.

That is why selection projects so often end in disappointment: they answer a question that was not the decisive one. A well-chosen system on an unclarified process landscape fails just as reliably as a badly chosen one, only with better reasoning in the selection record.

Control on your side, with Business Central as home: if BC fits, you keep authority over scope, data model and roadmap. If your processes are complex and you want to know whether Business Central is the solid home for them, let us assess that honestly in a first conversation.

The real question is rarely "which system", but whether your data foundation and your processes are mature enough for the switch.

Frequently asked questions

Briefly asked

Does DGP advise on the selection between different ERP systems?

No. We are not a system comparison. We are Business Central specialists and assess honestly when BC handles your complexity and when not.

When is Business Central the right choice for complex processes?

When you want a standard-close, upgradeable platform in the Microsoft ecosystem that supports several entities, manufacturing or rollouts, and your data foundation is mature enough for the switch.

Do you need an independent ERP selection consultant?

A structured selection yes, a long selection process rarely. More important than market breadth is someone who understands your processes and says honestly where a system fits and where it does not, including the limits of their own offering.

The bigger picture behind this question: ERP selection: criteria, approach and checklist.
