Which ERP vendors are worth considering for the German mid-market?
The market is clearer than it looks. What matters is which category you belong to.

The German ERP market for mid-sized companies falls into four groups: international platforms such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and SAP, large German vendors with their own suite, industry specialists, and smaller regional systems. The sensible first question is not which vendor is best, but which group your company belongs to by size, international footprint and process complexity. That reduces the field from dozens to a handful.
The approach with criteria and checklist: ERP selection
The direct comparison of the two large platforms: Business Central and SAP in the mid-market
The four groups in the market
The first group are international platforms. They are broadly positioned, localised in many countries and backed by a large partner network. For companies with foreign entities or plans to grow across borders that is often the decisive point, because localisations and legal requirements come from the vendor instead of being built in-house.
The second group are established German vendors with their own suite. They are often deeply rooted in particular industries, and their strength lies in proximity to German accounting and to grown mid-market processes. The downside shows in international rollouts, where localisations are missing or have to be solved through partners.
The third group are industry specialists who have tailored their system to one manufacturing type or sector. The fourth are smaller regional vendors with close customer relationships. Both can be the right choice if the fit is there, and both become a risk when the company outgrows that fit.
Which questions genuinely sort the field
Three questions reduce the list faster than any catalogue of criteria. First: will you need to post in further countries within the next five years? If so, everything without localisation there drops out. Second: how many users work productively in the system? Below roughly fifty users different economics apply than above two hundred. Third: what share of your value creation rests on a process that no standard covers?
Anyone who has answered those three questions usually faces two or three serious candidates. Everything beyond that is detailed assessment, and that only becomes worthwhile at this point.
A fourth question is often overlooked: how easily can you find people in your region who know the system? A system with limited reach can fit technically and still become a problem when support depends on individual people.
Why the vendor question is not the most important one
In practice the vendor decides success or failure less often than the approach does. Large technology programmes exceed budget or timeline in 65 to 80 percent of cases, and the causes almost never lie in the software. They lie in unclear decision paths, in processes only settled during the project, and in master data nobody looked at beforehand.
That does not mean the choice of system is irrelevant. It means the choice of system is a necessary but not a sufficient decision. Two companies can implement the same system and get to completely different places.
The vendor question therefore always comes with the partner question. Who implements the system and who steers when in doubt affects the outcome more than the decision between two technically suitable platforms.
Where DGP stands
We are specialists for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and we work senior-led. That means we know one platform deeply rather than many superficially, and steering stays on your side. If Business Central does not fit your situation, we say so, because a project on the wrong foundation helps nobody.
For the selection itself this means: we help where it is about checking whether and how a platform carries your processes, and about the question of what an offer really contains. For a neutral market comparison across all vendors, selection consultancies are the more suitable address.
The most honest advice at this point is vendor-independent: invest the time before the decision in clarifying your processes and your data. That work arises in every project. The only question is whether you do it beforehand or in the middle of the project under time pressure.

Frequently asked questions
Briefly asked
Which ERP vendor is best for mid-sized companies?
That cannot be answered in general, because it depends on size, international footprint and process complexity. It is more useful to sort the field with three questions: future foreign entities, number of productive users, and the share of processes no standard covers.
How many vendors should you compare?
After pre-sorting, two or three serious candidates usually remain. Comparing more costs time and rarely improves the decision, because the differences then lie in details that barely matter in operation.
Is a large vendor the safer choice?
Not automatically. Size says something about the availability of localisations and skilled people, and little about the fit to your processes. More important than the size of the vendor is who implements the system at your site and who steers the project.
